Nanci Kushner formerly served as a Pilates instructor with Jumping Frogs Pilates, then operated her own studio, NPK Pilates. Dedicated to keeping fit, Nanci Kushner can regularly be found working out, and she especially enjoys boxing. Many people think of boxing as a men’s sport, but it has several benefits for women as well.

Since boxing provides a highly repetitive workout, it remains one of the best forms of exercise for toning rather than bulking muscles. Although this is particularly true for muscles of the core and shoulders, it applies to those of the arms, back, chest, and legs, too.

Furthermore, the punching work that boxing requires dramatically improves eye-hand coordination, especially when using speed bags. Because of the fast movement of the speed bag, individuals must react in milliseconds, necessitating the rapid development of basic reflexes.

Many women report that boxing is liberating because it facilitates stress relief in a way that differs from arguably more mindful activities like Pilates. Punching a heavy bag or sparring quickly depletes energy and clears the mind. The exercise is so draining that individuals simply do not have the energy to be stressed.
